/ selected works

Here you’ll find a selection of work I have completed for community members, local businesses and community organisations as well as corporate groups and public art commissions.

ST PATRICKS COLLEGE

I was commissioned to work with students, staff and local Elders from the community to design this custom Acknowledgement of Country sign for the school. The words, shape and artwork were a collaboration between students and our Elders and I have created the necessary files for fabrication.

The nine circular shapes represent the nine nations that once called lutruwita/Tasmania home prior to the invasion and dispossession from their homelands. The organic lines represent the waterways that surround the city of Launceston and feed into the kanamaluka/Tamar River.

W RUGBY

Earlier this year I collaborated with W Rugby to design a First Nations ball that would be included in their Won for Won program, where with every ball sold, they donate another to Indigenous communities and Country clubs.

The artwork is called CONNECTIONS and is encompassing of our shared connection and narrative as First Nations people and illustrates our deep and detailed relationship with Country. The limited edition ball is available for purchase via W Rugby.

ETM Perspectives

I was commissioned to create a hero graphic that could be used by ETM Perspectives and the National Indigenous Australians Agency for the WEX Regional gathering in Nipaluna/Hobart.

The gathering provides an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to gain insight and understanding about the different careers available within the public service sector. Students meet and hear directly from staff and other students who have pursued and been successful in their careers in the public service sector.

TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Following on from the commission I completed for the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra’s Osbcura concert, I was commissioned to design the artwork for their Reconciliation Action Plan.

The lines represent the many layers of knowledge that exist within our community and throughout our culture which have supported and sustained our practices for thousands and thousands of years.

The circles and lines could also be interpreted as graphic notation which lends itself to the core business of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra through music and the creation of sound.

Tasmanian Acknowledgement of Country sign for Du Cane Brewing and Dining Hall, Launceston

DU CANE BREWING & DINING HALL

I was contacted by the co-founder of Du Cane’s to create an Acknowledgement of Country sign that could be displayed outside their newly opened brewery and dining hall in Launceston.

They wanted a personalised Acknowledgement that reflected their company and their sentiment. The colour palette reflects their brand and marketing colours while the line work is reminiscent of the mural I completed indoors, Meeting Place.

Muwinina Country by Luana Towney on Blackspace Creative

CONSTANCE ARI

I was commissioned by Constance ARI and Luana Towney to design the layout and digitalise the hand-drawn illustrations that were created by Luana’s daughter for Muwinina Country.

The book was published under a limited print due to the limited funding available through the ngayapi niyakara program; a partnership between Constance ARI and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.

The book was sold via Blackspace Creative and is now sold out.

University of Tasmania Aboriginal Engagement Policy

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA

I was commissioned by the University of Tasmania to design a series of artworks for use throughout their Strategic Plan for Aboriginal Engagement 2021 - 2024.

The artwork needed to connect with and visually represent the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community. I designed three panels that reflected our connections to country, water and the deep time history of place.

Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Obscura Concert

TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

I worked with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Gloo Advertising to develop the artwork for the Obscura concert series, milaythina.

Titled milaythina, the Palawa word for Country, the concert was headlined by didjeridu virtuoso William Barton performing his own music along with Ross Edwards’ Tyalgum Mantras. In addition to this there was also music by Peter Sculthorpe, Brett Dean and Lisa Cheney. Conducted by Marko Letonja, milaythina explored music of the spirit, story and place.

You can read more about the concert here.

City of Hobart Acknowledgment of Country

CITY OF HOBART

Commissioned by the City of Hobart to design an Acknowledgment of Country plaque to be permanently installed outside of Town Hall. I used this opportunity to take a contemporary approach to the typical Acknowledgement of Country we are all so use to seeing and reading.

Hobart City Council unanimously passed the motion on the evening of March 15 and the work will be installed alongside a planting of native grasses and shrubs once design elements and fabrication has been finalised.

Denni Proctor, DENNI, Blackspace Creative

DENNI PROCTOR

Denni Proctor is a local Tasmanian Aboriginal singer, songwriter and performer who has recently teamed up with Greeley, a local hip-hop artist. Together they have been touring the state, supporting emerging talent and producing music.

I was commissioned to digitise an original artwork, adding some elements and designs. This will be turned into merch and sold at her shows around the state.

Paying hommage to the old times of playing cards at the kitchen table and our ancestral animal, the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo the artwork features markings from our petroglyphs or rock carvings that were left on Country by our Old People. The suite is Queens because thats what DENNI is!

GHD Building and Construction, Mural, Vinyl, Decal

GHD TASMANIA

I was commissioned by GHD to create a large scale vinyl artwork that was applied to the walls in their Burnie office.

Titled Rock Pools, this design is inspired by the rock pools found throughout the coastal country surrounding our island home.

These microcosms host a diverse community, each reliant on one another to co-exist in these often harsh environments.

Not only are they reliant on one another to continue hosting life but Country also informs this very cycle of life and death through the going out and in of the ocean tide.

North-West Pride, Burnie Tasmania

NORTH WEST PRIDE

I created this graphic and donated it to North West Pride because I’m so proud of the work they’re doing to support community in the region.

Garry Wakefield volunteers tirelessly to provide and support our community through the events, programs and outreach that is offered through this community group. I know he isn’t alone and others do a lot of work behind the scene but his effort is to be commended!

Garry has now made these and other designs available for sale so that you can flaunt your pride and show support for an incredible community group on the coast.

NAYRI NIARA

I was commissioned by Ruth Langford to develop a logo and marketing material for NAYRI NIARA.

In designing their new identity, I was also invited to create the marketing and branding materials for CHOSEN / lakapawa / TO BE SEEN an exhibition showcasing established and emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal artist chosen by Elders within our community which ran alongside the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair.

I worked with curators and artists and created a series of promotional material including signage such as corflutes and wall decals, posters and invitations for both print and digital use, social media content, an exhibition catalogue and title design. I also managed the NAYRI NIARA Facebook page throughout the duration of the two month contract.

In addition to this, I was lead photographer for both the opening and closing events as well as taking commercial photography for the LongHouse during the opening dinner which was an in-house dining experience for VIP guests.

TASMANIA LEGAL AID

Tasmanian Legal Aid commissioned me to create artwork for their Reconciliation Action Plan.In addition to this I was also responsible for designing the layout and formatting of the final document which is now a 16 page booklet.

The artwork consists of details from a larger piece where I have drawn a bed of kunikong or Pigface, a native plant that Tasmanian Aboriginal people would eat. It spreads across the ground and establishes a strong root system quite fast.

EMILY WURRAMARA

Emily Wurramara is a friend and an incredible singer songwriter from the far end of the Northern Territory. Emily relocated to Tasmania a few years ago to rest and refocus.

On her comeback, Emily hosted a series of intimate performances throughout lutruwita/Tasmania and needed merch for the occasion, not previously having had official merch.

I was commissioned to create the uniquely Tasmanian design that pays hommage to the rock markings our old people left and the salt water that connects all coastal First Nations mob.

'Auntie' and 'Big Energy' are colloquial terms used by mob around Australia.
